While visiting Taranto, you must stop at the Doric Columns in Piazza Castello.
These sculptures are dated back to the 6th century B.C. and are the only rest of a unique ancient Spartan temple in front of the castle and the crystal-clear sea.
They are composed in Doric order and also have a base with three drums.
History of Doric Columns
Those Columns are a heritage of the Magna Grecia and they were part of a Temple dedicated to Poseidon, the Greek God of the Seas, created in the 5th century B.C..
The archeologist Luigi Viola was the one to study very deeply those works of art and discover the Temple to which the Colonne Doriche belongs, even if it doesn’t exist anymore.
Tips:
In front of the Doric Columns, in the Piazza Castello, there is Aragonese Castle or Castle Saint Angel.
