Taranto Castle is a spectacular fortress facing the charming sea of this area.
Furthermore is called the Aragonese Castle and the Castle of Saint Angel.
As a result of its history, became one of the best touristic attractions of Taranto.
The history of the Taranto Castle
The Aragon King Ferdinand I of Naples built this Castle in 1492 to defend the area from the invasor: this is the reason for the name Aragonese Castle.
The fortress was built over a former Norman castle, based on a Byzantine one used to protect the area against the Saracen attacks.
Talking about important rudiments of the castle, preliminarily the Habsburgs used it as captivity.
The fortress consists of wide and short halls, a characteristic element of Norman culture, and the structure is composed of spherical halls and internal walkways.
Inside the castle, you can also find the Renaissance tabernacle of S. Leonardo.
