Lecce is located in the toe area of Puglia Region called Salento, and it has earned the name: Baroque lady because of its huge artistic heritage realized in 1500. Strolling around it’ll be easy to be impressed by the rich decorative style of churches, monuments, and buildings, indeed.
The nearest airport to Lecce is the International Airport of Salento in Brindisi, but Bari’s Karol Wojtyła Airport is also easy to reach. The Main Train Station leads you right in the middle of the city, not far from the Museum Sigismondo Castromediano, an exposition of historical finds and paintings from Roman times to 1700.
The medieval Castle of Charles V of Hapsburg, another wonderful piece of history, is kept in the Old City. You can visit that part of Lecce entering from Porta Napoli, Porta San Biagio, or Porta Rudiae.
Once you’re in, make sure to reach the heart of the old city, Piazza Sant’Oronzo, named after the Patron Saint. The square is dominated by the building Sedile, also called Palazzo del Seggio, and hosts the Church of Saint Mark and the Roman Amphitheater, dating back to the 2nd century AD, too.
Don’t leave the old city until you have visited some of the artisans’ shops with handmade works of papier-mâché and you’ve eaten at least one Pasticciotto and one Rustico.
The city doesn’t properly overlook the Adriatic Sea, but it’s a smart point to start your tour in Salento. In fact, just moving a few kilometers out of the city by train or car, you’ll be able to reach some of the top summer destinations in Italy, like Porto Cesareo, Gallipoli, Otranto, Torre dell’Orso and Santa Maria di Leuca.
As you might have understood, Lecce offers different attractions that make it perfect for a visit in every season, so just start to plan your trip following our suggestions now!
