Umbra Forest

A natural spectacle in Puglia

In a protected area inside the National Park of Gargano, in the north of Puglia, there is a place where nature is unspoiled and lush: this is the Umbra Forest /ita: Foresta Umbra/.

The name Umbra /eng: shady/ derives from the vegetation that is so dense to make it very shady.

The area of the Forest reaches about 10,000 hectares and has remarkable biodiversity.

Do you want to take a venture into these woods? Read the article below!

Umbra Forest – UNESCO site

The Umbra forest /ita: Foresta Umbra/ has been the subject of ongoing studies, especially for the vegetation phenomenon of macrosomatism: the plants here are much wider than normal.

This enables you to see giant holm oaks, pines and beeches: amazing, don’t you think?

The Forest is also home to more than 2000 plant species: it is the largest Italian hardwood forest with specimens over 40 meters high with huge diameters (more than 1meter!).

In particular, since 2017, its beech forests became part of a UNESCO transnational site called “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and other Regions of Europe” / ita:“ Antichi Faggeti primordiali dei Carpazi e di altre regioni d’Europa”.

Must-see in Umbra Forest

The Umbra Forest /ita: Foresta Umbra/ is a must-see for people of all ages: adults can enjoy the outlined paths to have close contact with nature while the child can discover fauna and flora.

It was really lovely to see children discovering deer in the area dedicated to them!

The child can also have a good time in a playground made entirely of wood!

In the heart of the Forest there is an enchanting place surrounded by lush nature: this is the Umbra Lake /ita: Lago d’Umbra/.

This beautiful stretch of water, set in a picturesque setting, is rich in flora and fauna and a must-see place for Instagram lovers.

In particular, there is a little wood walkway with a stunning view of the Lake and the surrounding nature, an ideal place to take unforgettable pictures!
