Bagnarole in Leuca

Reserved places to take a bath

In the beautiful coastline of Santa Maria di Leuca, bathed by crystal clear waters, there are so-called Bagnarole.

Those structures are stone facilities built on the seaside, which served as a reserved place for the aristocratic ladies to take a bath.

A bath away from prying eyes in Leuca

In the Belle Epoque, every aristocratic family, owner of a villa, had its own bath environment in stone or wood.

The only ones still visible are the stone ones, a symbol of nobility (rounded, squared, or octagonal) that reproduced the style and colors of the villa to which it belonged.

Those “cabins” were used by the women of the Salento aristocracy to undress, to rest from the sun and to search for refreshment far from the curious looks of bathers.

Common people, in the meantime, usually used small natural landings on the coast or built tanks digging the rock close to the sea.
